A Few thoughts on 24

I did not start watching 24 with the rest of humanity. It only caught my interest with the movie “Redemption” that aired in the winter and then only because it involved the African child soldier aspect.

Since then, I’ve watched almost all the previous six seasons either online or rental. (A person can really cover some ground on rent-one-get-one free days.)

Here are some observations that have come as a result of watching 6 seasons in a month.

1. Anytime Jack Bauer says, “You’re gonna have to trust me,” your life is about to go very much south.

2. The most used line in the series is, “I know how you must feel.” This line is usually used by people who don’t.

3. With the exception of Jack Bauer, all CTU field agents are terrible shots and typically last four minutes before being killed.

4. The only time that Jack Bauer ever runs out of ammo in a pistol is when he needs to stand up and make a show of ejecting the clip. As long as he is behind a car/crate/cardboard box/greeting card he never runs out of ammo.

5. Jack Bauer is impervious to machine gun fire.

6. Life expectancy for cast members is nil; I hope you have other career plans.

7. Jack Bauer can drive or pilot any type of machinery or craft that mankind has ever invented.

8. Jack Bauer is McGyver with a grimace.

9. He shouts…a lot. He also says, “Thank you,” a lot; usually right after he’s ruined your life.

10. Bauer is always right, even when he’s wrong.

11. The producers believe in resurrection.

12. Killing off Edgar Stiles (Styles) was great drama, but I miss the interaction between he and Chloe.

13. Tony, Tony, Tony, you killed me this week, dude.

  1. If you can watch 6 seasons of 24 in a month, you have no excuse not to watch Lost.

  3. That’s nuthin; … didja ever watch SUPERMAN?

Like … bullets bounce off him, but when the crook runs out of ammo and throws the gun at him, He DUCKS.

    Go figure.

  4. Are you going to the Invisible Children event in Atlanta next weekend? I ask because you mentioned the African child soldier aspect and that is what it is about. I put a post up on my blog about it this past week. Our youth group is going.

  5. You neglected to mention Jack’s favorite and oft-used expletive. I picked up on 24 at the beginning of season four, in my opinion the best season ever. I’ve seen every season since, and have purchased seasons one and two on DVD–I haven’t had time to watch season two yet, but I’m working on it. My favorite line from season two is Jack saying, “you always want to get things fixed, but you never want to get your hands dirty. Now get me a hack saw!”

  6. They also show Sprint phones a lot!

  7. But -as we have learned in the last few episodes- Jack Bauer is NOT immune to a bio weapon. At times (like this week when he had confronted Tony and began to have another reaction to the bio agents), I keep thinking he is just “pretending” to be sick because it will help him get the jump on the bad guy. That’s why I was saying to the screen, “Shoot him, Jack. SHOOT HIM, NOW !!” Only to have him go into a seizure and let Tony take his gun.

Isn’t it strange how at the top of EVERY hour something really dangerous happens or is set in motion ??

  8. Through seven seasons of 24 the one thing I have learned is that Jack is the only one who can get anything done in this nation. For that reason I have always thought of Marty as the Jack Bauer of the SBC.

Interesting sidenote – a year ago in West Africa I noticed they were showing 24 reruns. Upon visiting a remote village, I noted one lone TV antenna – no lights, no plumbing – but one TV. I asked a man if he knew Jack Bauer – He beamed and said: “Jack Bauer is a great American.”

Me too, so I must ask: ” Is the Great Commission Resurgence Declaration and the ensuing discussion enough to force Jack (Marty) out of his self-imposed, no-SBC-commentary, retirement status?

    Blessings Marty!

  10. My favorite Jack Bauer line is…
The only reason your still conscious is I don’t feel like carrying you!

  11. And we thank Jack’s cousin, Grady, for coming to his defense ;^)
