  1. Uhhh … no. Except they’d barely have had time to take attendance in Sunday School.

  2. I’ve heard of baptism for the dead, so guess it was only a matter of time…

  3. Not except, “thank you Lord” for not calling me there.

  4. That will bring people in!

  5. Ideally, honor the legacy of those deceased members and celebrate life in Christ. But in reality, it speaks of a closed community (likely not closed communion or it would not be advertised) that assumes their traditions and ‘bubble’ are attractive to those outside their traditions and ‘bubble’.

  8. Happy to help! I would guess that is one country graveyard that won’t be moved.

  9. Benji-
Good question. Since this picture wasn’t taken near Endor, I’m not sure.

  10. Laugh all you want, but I grew up in a church that observed church-wide “Memorial Day.” We had no Sunday School on this special day in May. During the Sunday School hour my dad, the church clerk, would stand and read the name, date of birth and date of death of every person who was buried in the church cemetery. Anyone who wished could stand at the appropriate time and share a good word about any of the dearly departed. The church was founded in 1910 and when I was a child in the 70’s it took forever for my Dad to read the “Lamb’s Book of Life.” My dad had to make sure he recorded the names and dates of everyone who was buried in the cemetery all year long between “Memorial Day” services.

My mother grew up in this church and when she was a child, the entire congregation walked through the cemetery and someone read every tombstone aloud. They took breaks and sung hymns as well.

We had worship at 11 which included communion, dinner on the grounds and revival began on Sunday night. Lord knows we needed revival after spending time with all those dead folks!

These type of services rank right up there with Easter Sunrise Services; ABSOLUTELY NO BIBLICAL PRECEDENT WHATSOEVER!!! (Can you tell I’m bitter? HA!)

  11. I think that sounds amazing, Phil. But I’m sure it would be tough to endure as a child! I just think of the relationship building such history and sharing could foster!

  12. Marty, why did you scratch your name off the sign? ;-)

  13. Bryan Riley,

Being bloggers probably make many of us (me) lower than a snake’s belly. But, I will always be amazed at God granting me the opportunity to watch you from the porch of my “Blogtown home” as you have just been saturated by God’s Spirit over the last two years.

I beg you, by the tender mercies of our Lord to never loose your zeal for Jesus and His Word. God, in His wonderful purpose, has given you what 12 years in any seminary could not give you in just these last 2 years.

I do hope, that before I go, I get to meet you face-to-face.

  14. That sounds like the church I’ve always heard about but never seen. You know . …. the one people were just dying to join.

  15. I’m confused. Do we count those as “resident” or “Non-resident” members?

    Comment by David Wilson — May 31, 2008 @ 9:54 pm

  16. David,

It seems their residence has been established. As to their membership?
